About DecodeETF

For curious, high-agency investors who want to compound their wealth

My name is Knight Sukthaworn. I am the founder of DecodeETF. Welcome.

I built this out of frustration.

Canada has more ETF offerings than ever, yet the tools available to Canadian investors have not kept pace. You can screen ETFs five different ways on some sites. You can pull historical data somewhere else. Excel handles many analytical tasks reasonably well. But doing all of this just to understand what you own, identify opportunities, or evaluate your performance can feel like a part-time job. At that point, you might as well just buy XEQT and move on.

I think it should be easier than that.

This is a website about ETFs, and I believe in the evidence behind broadly diversified, low-cost investing. But being informed should be easy. What am I actually buying? Am I taking on more risk than I think? Is my portfolio performing the way I intended? These are simple questions that most tools make unreasonably hard to answer.

The investor you think you are vs the investor you actually are

The Decode Engine is the backbone of DecodeETF. It shows you your true investment profile.

You might believe you are invested in high-quality compounding companies. The data might show a portfolio full of momentum-chasing names. You might believe you are well-diversified across different holdings. The data might show that your holdings all behave the same way under different economic conditions, because they are all exposed to the same underlying companies.

The goal is to help you reconcile the investor you think you are with the investor you actually are. That gap is where most portfolio mistakes live.

Tools to build and test your conviction

Once you understand what you own, two tools help you experiment with what you want to own.

The Backtest Studio lets you test any combination of Canadian ETFs with different rebalancing strategies. See how a thesis would have held up historically, across bull markets, bear markets, and the quieter periods in between that don't get talked about enough.

The Index Match finds the combination of Canadian-listed ETFs whose historical returns most closely approximate a target exposure. If you have a thesis about a specific market but can't find a single ETF that captures it cleanly, Index Match builds the closest available approximation from what's listed in Canada.

Evaluating what you have built

The Portfolio Tracker's What-If Machine gives you an honest read on how you are actually performing. Based on your input transactions, it benchmarks your decisions against simply buying a popular index ETF. Useful to know when you are outperforming. More useful to know when you are not, because that is when adjusting your strategy matters most.

Coverage and cost

DecodeETF covers 1,000+ Canadian-listed ETFs across the TSX and NEO exchanges. Most tools are available with a free account. Deeper analytics are available for $9/month. No account or credit card required to get started.

If you have suggestions, questions, or find something broken, use the contact form. I read every message.

Now let's go find out what you actually own.
